The “white roads” in the Siena countryside: itineraries, routes and some useful tips

Routes and stages on the white roads near Siena, riding a bike much more besides

A journey through the landscape of clay dunes of the Crete Senesi area, easy to navigate and at the same time very evocative, travelling from Buonconvento and passing through the villages of Asciano, Torre a Castello and San Giovanni d’Asso. The latter is also home to the Museum and Educational Centre of Truffles and Wild Herbs. Along this route, which winds for about 40 km of easy cycling, it is worth stopping by the Abbazia di Monte Oliveto Maggiore, with its famous frescoed cloister. After this, a gourmet break is essential, to sample the typical dishes of the area, made using local white truffles. Another option in order to admire the spectacular gullies and biancane — clayey outcrops — that make up the lunar landscape of the Crete Senesi, is to visit the Accona desert. From there, going in the direction of Asciano, you come to the ancient and picturesque farms of Bollano, San Nazario and Caprili, before arriving at Pieve a Salti. As an alternative to cycling, there are those who prefer to explore the charming Siena countryside riding a motorcycle, or hiking along the panoramic nature trails. A recommended route for those wanting to explore the area the white road to Cosona, which involves a hike of about three hours through rural landscapes, solitary farms and farmhouses. In addition to the Cosona Farm complex, the monastery of Sant’Anna in Camprena and the charming village of Lucignano d’Asso are also worth a visit.

Touring around the hills of Siena: ideas and suggestions

For a dream holiday in the Sienese hills, first you must choose a good base from which to visit Siena and surrounding areas. The Hotel Garden, in the city that hosts the Palio, is ideal if you are looking for place to stay that is professional and modern, without sacrificing the appeal of a charming 4-star hotel. The hotel enjoys a privileged position: located just a few minutes’ walk from the station, you can easily reach both the city centre and the main attractions and landmarks of the area. Those travelling with the whole family and planning to discover the area along the white roads, can opt for simple routes, allowing for excursions in the flatter areas, which are also suitable for children. Among these, the white road that joins Torre a Castello with Asciano is especially advisable. For fans of medieval history there are plenty of abbeys, churches and castles surrounded by green forests, which complete the design of these lands. Those more interested in dining experiences can stop off for tastings and purchases at one of the many dairy farms in the area, where you will find good local pecorino cheese to accompany the tasty cinta cold meats. Alternatively, you can schedule a tour of the wine cellars, and bring home a bottle of Val d’Arbia white wine.
