Excellent products at the Market of the Campo

A peerless location

Saying that Piazza del Campo is the symbol of Siena is rather reductive. Or, at least, the statement is only half truth. This place is the emblem of a culture, a tradition and a folklore that have not suffered the harshness of time over the centuries, while maintaining their authenticity and vigor. Piazza del Campo represents Siena and the Italian Renaissance, the historical period that is still taught today with the same discipline by the schools of the whole world. Inevitably and indissolubly linked to the Palio, the square, or the “shell” as all the lovers of this place call it, has always been a wonder of Italy. From the mid-sixteenth century to today, apart from the media, this evenet has not changed in anything. The double and triple arched windoes are still there to smile, delighted with what they are admiring. On July 2 and August 16 each year, the spotlights are aimed here to closely follow the bagarre of a race that started exactly twelve months earlier. On the first or in the second weekend of December, instead, the same lights focus on an event whose tradition goes back even further: the Market of the Campo.

Just like the fourteenth century

An itinerary that has the aim to retrace the history of food and wine in Siena can not also contemplate the Market of the Campo. Just before the Christmas holidays, in the magical climate that only Piazza del Campo can give, the city and all its lucky visitors will take a leap back in time of a few centuries, and will experience the past with the same spirit and with the same genuineness. Within a few steps from the Siena Inns structures, the Market of the Campo is the exact and consistent re-enactment of what the municipal authorities planned between 1300 and 1350. There will be over 150 exhibition spaces devoted to food and crafts, side by side with laboratories, conferences, culinary shows and tastings. The Great Market, as the weekly market was known during the Middle Ages, will feature all the typical products of the “contado” of Siena, a showcase of local food and wine excellence that had no contender throughout the centuries.
